Italian national, Yale Ph.D, Film Studies professor at a Southern California university, vegan, animal rights activist, feminist, human companion of an umbrella cockatoo, Alba. A cancer patient: esthesioneuroblastoma, a rare malignant neoplasm of the nasal cavity that was first discovered in France in 1924. Only 1,100 cases have been diagnosed worldwide. I was misdiagnosed at first ("just a polyp") and then the Cleveland Clinic saved my life. I underwent endoscopic resection followed by six weeks of radiation therapy. I would like to contact other patients to exchange thoughts and experiences, the rare birds that we are!

Staying alive. 8 years and counting.

Godard,
Hope you are doing well. I am going to Memorial Sloan Kettering for my follow up exam and scans next week. I am anxiously awaiting the results. It would be reassuring to hear from you to let me know how you are doing. Happy 2009.

Judy

Godard,
I did not respond to your postings earlier because my diagnosis was not the only crisis I was dealing with at the time. Anyway, since my last posting, I have had one additional surgery to remove the turbinate in my nose the tumor grew from. The path report was negative. A # of physicians met and decided I did not need radiation therapy. My case was discussed by a group of Yale physicians. Since then, I was seen by a physician a U Penn. He feels I need to undergo further surgery to remove the remainder of my olfactory bulb/nerve to prevent further recurrence followed by radiation theray. Another physician @ Memorial Sloan Kettering doesn't not feel additional surgery is required because my surgical margins were clean. Lastly, I am scheduled to see a physician @ Yale next week. I will then decide what to do. All physicians are reputable. Still perplexed. Let me know your history. My tumor was confined to my nasal cavity? Was yours? After your surgery and rad tx, what did your follow up consist of? I think your physician from the Cleveland Clinic is no longer there. If you have time, I would appreciate your feedback.
Thanks

Thanks for the comment. I attribute my state of preservation to my blessedly stress-free life. Man, am I lucky that way. (hah)

It's all to easy to view our doctors as gods, but they're people, and some of them are jerks. For someone who's providing care to make flip comments like that is inexcusable. I don't care if he goes on to win the Nobel Prize. On a human level, he's an irredeemable assh-le in my book.

Oh, he might have added an insincere "Have a nice day."
