New Web Search Tool for Health Searches
DATE: 08 Nov 2006, 10:58 pm

Cancer Monthly, has been using a search tool (that we built) to help expedite our web research. It can simultaneously search Google, Yahoo, DMOZ, Blogs, Message Boards, Pubmed, FDA, CDC, NIH, Books, Audio Recordings, Videos, and quite a bit more. People who have seen it have asked if they can use it too. We thought that was a good idea so we built a general use version called "HealthSearchPlus." It's a nice tool for those of us who do a lot of intensive web research on cancer or other health related topics. It's available here:

New Resource Section
DATE: 15 Aug 2006, 6:21 pm

As you may have noticed, My Cancer Place had a section for Classified Ads. It was probably unnecessary and this was reflected in the fact that it was not being used. However, we have had suggestions about creating some type of resource area so we have converted this section to Resources.

You can use this new section to post/link websites, videos, organizations, clinicians and articles. You can use the linking brackets to make the links live. It’s easy and it is explained in the Help Section (“How do I put in links to other websites?”).

Obviously we don’t want this area to turn into a bunch of billboards so we ask that this area is not used for advertising, sales or marketing.

Thank you

DATE: 24 Jul 2006, 12:17 pm

Please see the Events tab for two upcoming teleconferences with:

Dr. Bernie Siegal
Dr. William Forsythe

The call is originating in North Carolina. Currently, we are setup to use a U.S. based conferencing service which means that the call is open to all those within the U.S. However, we are still researching other options for international callers. So, if you are outside, the U.S. feel free to sign-up and we will let you know if another conferencing service is available.

Remember, that:

1) You can e-mail in questions even if you can't participate (and some of these questions may be asked during the conference);

2) The teleconference will be digitally recorded and posted on this website for all to listen.

Teleconference with James Forsythe, MD
DATE: 21 Jul 2006, 3:50 pm

Teleconference with James Forsythe, MD

Dr. James Forsythe has agreed to participate in a teleconference with our community. He’s an MD who has been treating cancer patients using conventional and integrative medicine. He has said:

“I believe in the principle that effective cancer care should include many different types of therapeutic support form the intelligent and safe use of chemotherapy to innovative applications of homeopathic remedies, intravenous delivered nutrients, herbs and dietary measures and immune-stimulating therapies.”

The teleconference is scheduled for Thursday, August 24th at 8:00 PM Eastern Time (5:00 PM Pacific Time). He will discuss his integrative approaches to treating cancer. I have provided his “bio” information below. More information will be posted in the Events section in a couple of days. Everyone is invited to participate, but if you can’t, the entire teleconference will be digitally recorded and posted on this site for easy listening.

James William Forsythe M.D., H.M.D.

* Doctorate of Medicine from University of California San Francisco
* Undergraduate degree from University of California at Berkeley
* 30 Years Practicing Medicine in Northern Nevada
* Certified in Homeopathy (the only Homeopath in Nevada with hospital privileges)
* Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology Utilization Review and Quality Assurance
* Former Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno Medical School
* Board Eligible in Clinical Pathology and Medical Gerontology

Military Experience

* 26 Years in the United States Army Medical Corps
* Retired Full Colonel
* Former State Surgeon in the Nevada Army National Guard
* Vietnam War Veteran including a tour of duty for 12 months, with commendation medal

Personal History

* Married 26 years to Earlene, an advanced nurse practitioner and business manager of their clinics
* Raised 5 children
* Favorite sports: tennis, racquetball, skiing and hiking

Since 1986, Dr. Forsythe became interested in combining conventional and alternative medicine. He was the only oncologist in the area that would treat cancer patients who were under the care of an alternative physician. He noted that patients who were integrating conventional treatments with alternative therapies, were doing better. They had fewer side affects from the chemotherapy and their quality of life was far superior. This convinced him that conventional medicine had made great strides with their chemotherapy drugs, but were lacking in keeping the patient's immune system stimulated. He began to study the science of alternative medicine, and in 1995 he received his homeopathy certificate. Dr. Forsythe is currently in the process of researching the use of homeopathic does of chemotherapy to determine if non-toxic dosing will achieve comparable results.

Want to be on TV?
DATE: 21 Jul 2006, 3:45 pm

WCUA-TV, the NBC 10 affiliate in Philadelphia would like to air a story about My Cancer Place.

The producer contacted me and said that she would like to do an interview with My Cancer Place members from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware who are near Philly. The crew would come to you and shoot about a half hour of tape which will probably be edited down. I imagine they will ask you about your experience with cancer, why you joined My Cancer Place, your experience with the internet…that kind of stuff. Please let me know if you are interested and I will put you in touch directly with the producer. If you are in that neighborhood, I hope you will participate to help us get the word out!

We Are Building This Community Together
DATE: 14 Jul 2006, 4:29 pm

Hello All,

I want to thank everyone for their excellent suggestions and help on the site:

• Robyn, thanks for your amazing tech suggestions and I look forward to working with you on them.

• Adam, thanks for the great ideas about the Forums.

• Godard, thanks for all your thoughts.

• Steve, thanks for all your insights.

• If I forgot anyone, I apologize. I have been juggling a lot lately. But, I do really appreciate everyone's words of encouragement. It's been quite a project over the last few months to pull this amazing website together.

We are working on a schedule of teleconferences so that every member of this community can listen in and ask questions of people who can add something valuable to our lives. If you know of a particularly experienced or knowledgeable individual such as a cancer book author, cancer survivor, or practitioner who you think would be a good speaker feel free to pass on the information.

We have over 90 members in just two weeks, which is amazing considering that news of the site is only spreading through grass roots efforts and word-of-mouth. But, we need your assistance. This is your community. The more it grows the more valuable and interesting it will become for us all. Here are a few suggestions to help spread the word. Since I can’t do it all, I do appreciate your help with this.

• Please tell others in different internet cancer forums about the existence of this community. You can just add a post about My Cancer Place.

• Please invite other patients to join. This can be done easily if you have their e-mail address by clicking on the Invite tab or the Invite button at the very bottom of the screen. Or, if you are part of a support group, you can pass on the information in the group.

• If you see professional caregivers you can always tell them about this community so that they can mention it to others that they see.

• Your profile and your web pages each have their own URL. When you are at these pages you can copy the URL address from your browser.

For example: my profile is:

http://www.mycancerplace.com/profile.php?id=29

And one of my web pages is:

http://www.mycancerplace.com/profile.php?sub_section=view_blog&id=29&sub_id=37

You can attach your URL(s) to your emails as a signature (if it’s appropriate) and even submit your URL’s to search engines like Google.

• And, the biggie (for the ambitious only)…you can always educate someone who has access to the mainstream media about this community (i.e. letters to the editor, story ideas to newspapers).

Any additional suggestions are always welcome.

Again, thank you for being one of the first to participate and support this new community.

Sincerely,
Michael

Upcoming Teleconference
DATE: 25 Jun 2006, 2:37 pm

On June 29, 2006 there will be over 100 people calling-in to listen to Madeleen Herreshoff of CanHelp, Ann Fonfa of the Annie Appleseed Project, Paul Kraus of Surviving Mesothelioma, Dr. Paul Johnson of the 21st Century Medicine Clinic, and others. I am excited to be moderating this teleconference.

There are so many ways that patients can and should learn from other patients. Cancer strikes more people than almost any other disease and everyone who is dealing with a cancer diagnosis themselves or in their family quickly accumulates experience and knowledge. In a sense everyone has a piece of the puzzle. Through teleconferences, community websites like this, and other ways, patients can share this information and help each other face confusion and fear.
There are still a few places left, so feel free to sign up at: Sign-up.

MyCancerPlace will be the place to see the answers to questions submitted, network with the speakers and other attendees, and discuss people’s thoughts about the teleconference.
